You will find that a Greek island travel vacation consists of unique scenery and ancient archaeological sites, the most unbelievable tourist sites in the Mediterranean Sea. The islands are relaxing and entertaining with a wide variety of Greek traditions. The basis of it originates from the people of Greece, a blend of ancient ethnic groups influenced by Europe and surrounding countries—Mycenaean, Classical and Hellenistic Greeks, Byzantines, and those of the Ottoman Empire. Long known for their warmth, friendliness, and sportsmanship, there seems to be no limit to the quality of hosting they offer their visitors or guests – especially in gentle and peaceful areas like Plakias Bay on the island’s southern coast.

One of my favorite activities of the islands of Greece is to attend an ancient Greek play, based on the historical three types of drama in early Athens—tragedy, satyr and comedy plays – based on 5th century Greek playwrights Aeschylus, Aristophanes, Euripides, and Sophocles. Historically, you will find that Athens was the main center for the ancient Greek theater. This was intentional in order to develop a positive relationship with them during times of war. A Greek island travel vacation will still bring you in touch with the ancient plays, but with modernized comfort with acoustics and unique theater seating to enhance the quality of these famous plays.

For travelers who wish to treat their aches and pains, another quality activity is the renowned natural therapeutic springs of Greece and the Greek islands. Referred to as hydrotherapy programs, the springs were historically used around 2,000 B.C. by the father of medicine, Hippocrates, to heal certain diseases and levels of pain in his patients. The National Tourism Organization today owns most of the springs, along with a few independent companies.

The third major holiday in Greece is the “Dekapentavgoustos” of the Greek Orthodox on August 15th. This is one of the islands’ most memorable holidays, and one that you should really attend in order to receive the full impact of your Greek island travel vacation. Offering Greek hospitality at its best, it is a unique feast day devoted to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The Greeks share this special day with countryside festivals and church services, pulling in visitors and the islands’ most faithful. The icon of the Virgin Mary is believed to have healing properties, with thousands of Greeks traveling to the Panagia Soumela Monastery at Mount Vermio on this special occasion. Every village and town in Greece and the Greek islands celebrate this annual event, even the quaint resort village of Plakias Bay.

The islands of Greece are world famous for their annual religious and non-religious holidays, warm receptions from the island residents, healing mineral springs, an ancient Minoan civilization history, and land with over 75% mountains to enjoy amidst beautiful rocky gorges and cultivated lands. Combined with surrounding beaches and resorts, it is no wonder the islands are Europe’s favorite Greek island travel destinations.
